P005 → Sparks Film VFX

Sparks is an independently produced feature film written and directed by Fergus Campbell.  I worked on a few  small vfx shots  for the project.

This was the one I found most interesting,  it was a simple lens  debris effect  where the subject is throwing fruit out of a car window towards a neigboring  vehicle , breaking the fourth wall and having the fruit splatter onto the camera lens.

It was achieved by a minimal particle simulation made in houdini with the MPM solver which is then frozen immediately upon collision and then keyframed to slowly slide down the lens. I handled the compositing with Fusion inside of Davinci Resolve and exported the comp as layers for handoff. The main trick here was to add a bit of displacement to the plate as the viscous liquid build up on the lens would distort the image. Simple, but a fun little example of practical VFX.  I was not responsible for any color grading, so please keep in mind that this shot is pre-color grade.
